"Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Ephesians 5:14 NIV
I have a confession to make...I really love sleeping. And I'm actually very good at it! Since I was a child, I have always been able to fall asleep quickly and easily, and I rarely wake up during the night. I consider this a gift, and also a special skill that I have now passed on to my children. So there are no early Saturday mornings at our house! In fact, we have to wake our kids up for school every day.
On the rare occasion that I have had to wake up really early, as painful as it is, I have been amazed at how beautiful and peaceful it can be early in the morning, as well as how much I can accomplish when I start the day several hours earlier than usual! The light in the early morning is so beautiful and pure (in the summer that is) and dare I say, it can even feel invigorating. When the sun rises and begins to shine, everything suddenly looks more alive and ready to fulfill its intended purpose.
Ever since our GT Awakening Conference this fall, I have been keenly aware of all the places in scripture that God tells us to wake up. Over and over, I see God telling us to open our spiritual eyes and let the light of Christ shine in and through us. Because our journey is never just about us. Our lives are meant to be a beacon of light and hope to a hurting world all around us. But we can't recognize that if we are asleep to the plans and purposes of God and to how He wants to use us.
We first need to let the light of Christ fill us from the inside out and then God promises that our lives will become a light for someone else. The pathway for this is laid out in Ephesians 5: live in purity and with wisdom; be filled with the Spirit; worship the Lord (in song); and give thanks in everything. If we position ourselves in this way, we will be awake to the purposes of God in not only our lives but also in the world around us. Our lives will reflect a supernatural God who empowers us with everything we need and so much more than we could ever imagine.
When we wake up and live in the light, everything becomes more beautiful and more meaningful.
And that may be enough to get even a sleepyhead like me out of bed a little earlier!
